Zephyr MSI

When the Pioneer Zephyr shot across the Midwestern prairies in 1934, the gleaming silver train known as the “Silver Streak” set a new speed record, sparked American optimism in the midst of the Depression, and revolutionized both technology and design. Since 1960, it has inhabited a revered place at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry as the museum’s largest and perhaps best-known artifact, greeting visitors just beyond the entry point. Fitting, then, that it was chosen as a marquee renovation and conservation project for MSI, reopening in March 2021 in reimagined form — with lighting design and technology by longtime MSI partners, Morlights.

Though tight budgets and abbreviated timelines presented challenges, Morlights’ design focused on creating an experience that would transport museum visitors to the Zephyr in its heyday, while highlighting the key museum narrative that traces the history and evolution of technology into the present day. Determined to meet those design ideals, the Morlights team deciphered old systems with little documentation, integrated elements which were being retained with new features, and created upgraded controls and systems which museum staff will be able to maintain, adding years of life and functionality to the exhibit.

The finished design creates a breathtaking, engaging experience for visitors. First glimpsed from MSI’s entry, the silver exterior of the train is enhanced by carefully calibrated light that mimics prairie sunlight, creating an enticing gleam that beckons visitors forward. The Zephyr’s interior offers a striking contrast, mimicking period lighting with a soft, warm glow. Interior lighting is also intended to complement projections beyond the windows that offer the sensation of literally riding the rails. Combined with “sunlight” streaming in on the other side of the car, the effect is incredibly realistic.

Throughout the reimagined exhibit, Morlights’ deft touch with new technology brings educational content and precisely tailored lighting solutions into perfect harmony, helping the Pioneer Zephyr make hearts race and imaginations soar once again.

“Seeing this amazing artifact literally shining again gave the whole team goosebumps. What a ride!” Casey Diers
