When the Museum of Science and Industry decided to re-light their famous exhibit “The Great Train Story,” we offered a design that would provide detailed and sustainable lighting for years to come. The exhibit previously suffered from sporadic shadows and inconsistent lighting, and many of the complexities of the exhibit’s design were inaccessible to viewers. Matching the exhibit’s part-realism, part-theatrical tone, we updated the design with LED lighting and cutting-edge digital control.
By using color-tunable LED trackheads, our new lighting displayed the exquisite details of the exhibit that had previously been hidden in shadow. Our design highlighted the intricacies through careful calibration of color, warmth, and vibrance. We also dispensed with the strict two-tone settings, and instead implemented a centralized DMX-based system that smoothly transitioned the display throughout the day. Our lighting design not only greatly enhanced this historic exhibit, it also saved the museum the expense of thousands of kilowatt hours each year and reduced the amount of replacement bulbs needed, ensuring a continuous and lasting design.
