Numbers in Nature at MSI

The Museum of Science and Industry’s “Numbers in Nature: A Mirror Maze” is a dizzyingly precise exploration of mathematical patterns in nature. Designed by Luci Creative, the exhibit spans over 7,500 square feet of mirror maze, with interactive learning around every corner. The exhibit’s subject created a particularly unique challenge for our lighting design: how to replicate these perfect patterns with our lighting design. Morlights’ solution was to integrate RGB LEDs into the floor at the bottom of the mirrors, while also illuminating the 3D trees spaced on the walls with LED tape. This solution created geometric patterns extending infinitely into the reflected mirrors.

In addition to the mirror maze, we also worked with exhibit fabricators Ravenswood Studios to place LED fiber-optics into the cases, as well as added projections to the entrance of the museum. Our complex, well-planned lighting design complements the sense of wonder and spirit of interactive learning in “Numbers in Nature,” tailored to assist this exciting exhibit in its exploration of the mathematical order all around us.
