In a dining culture full of faux pas and pretension, Formento’s feels like family. The immediately inviting atmosphere comes down to more than decor — it’s a philosophy implemented by Gary Lee Partners’ John Ross, who named the restaurant after his Italian grandmother Nonna Formento. A delightful blend of classic and modern, complete with antique furniture and vintage table settings hosting some of the best Italian food in the city of Chicago, the restaurant desired a lighting design that reflected its values of warmth and community. Morlights implemented a flexible and classic design to suit Formento’s programming and inviting aesthetic.
When Morlights began the design process, we knew that it was crucial our lighting be attuned to the restaurant spirit. We utilized LED and incandescent sources with 2,700K CCT for complementary, romantic lighting throughout the front of house. Our lights draw focus to the exquisite design details, like the vintage sideboard lovingly repurposed as a serving station. We also implemented LED cove lights to soften the tin ceilings in the bar and private dining room, further adding to the gentle glow that extends throughout. Our lighting design came with a DALI-based control system, putting flexibility and precision into the client’s hands for future events and special parties. This flexible, classic design extends the welcoming ethos of Formento’s, with just the right touch of nostalgia.
