Duck Duck Goat is a deep dive into Chinese-American cuisine and food culture, delivered with all the trappings of the culinary tradition that is part culture, part genre. A bold concept by Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard, the space deliberately leans into theatrics for a playful, fantastical experience. Designed by renowned AvroKO and using America’s Chinatowns as inspiration, the restaurant serves what it calls “Reasonably Authentic Chinese Food.” It’s an experience that dodges self-importance at every turn, all the while delivering exceptional service and exquisite dishes.
Duck Duck Goat marked Morlights’ fifth collaboration with Boka Restaurant Group and our third with AvroKO. We tackled the architectural lighting and controls for the restaurant designing a unique experience for each of the restaurant’s rooms, including the main bar and five dining rooms. These distinctive lighting plans were implemented with layered LED lighting and color tunable maps for the varying palettes. We also focused on the details, like lighting the Chinese takeout boxes cheekily mounted on the walls with track lights hidden in the ceiling, and lighting the foyer like a Chinatown storefront with bold, deep colors. These designs were delivered with comprehensive, user-friendly controls, using a DALI-based system to eliminate flickering and create graceful dimming transitions. Lighting by Morlights assisted Duck Duck Goat in implementing its brash new concept, a restaurant delivered with equal parts perfectionism and humor.
