The Chicago Adler Planetarium’s “Deep Space Adventure” at the Grainger Sky Theater is the largest continuous digital image in the world, utilizing supercomputers and state-of-the-art telescopes for 360 degree, fully immersive projections of the universe. Visitors hurtle through space on the observation deck of a futuristic spaceship, getting an up-close look at planets, stars, and galaxies. Morlights’ lighting supports this incredibly sophisticated exhibit for an experience that’s truly out of this world.
Our new design increased lighting flexibility within the exhibit, as well as improved programming. We worked in both the Clark Family Welcome Gallery and the Grainger Sky Theater to create a cohesive lighting design throughout the visitor experience. Through 125 LED lights placed in the Gallery, the exhibit can generate 16 million unique colors via 2 billion combinations. These LEDs backlight 20,000 square yards of fabric to create a panoramic setting for multimedia interaction. We built the Clark Family Welcome Gallery as a transition area to prime viewers for the theater, optimizing lighting to help eyes adjust. Within the theater, 400 individual LED’s are capable of unique programming for total control over the 360 degree projection. The technology and immersive experience on display at the Adler Planetarium is unparalleled, and we are honored to have provided services for this extraordinary endeavor.
