Lighting a personal treasure

Lighting a personal treasure

When you’re looking for a way to store the more than 300 bottles of wine that are taking over your home, lighting might not be your first consideration—unless you’re Avi Mor, owner of Morlights. When the Mor family decided that their wine collection needed a new home, Avi and the Morlights team got to work planning and implementing a detailed lighting system that would not only deliver ease of use, utility and compatibility with the wine cellar’s complex construction process, it would give the space a distinctive, Avi-approved wow factor.

The space was planned as not only a working space where wine would be stored and cataloged, but an entertaining and display space, with lighting that could illuminate the tiny type on wine labels, highlight a row of beautifully illuminated bottles or create a moody glow. Working around a carefully planned wine racking system, Morlights plotted each detail of the lighting infrastructure with precision, making sure it would fit seamlessly with the room’s other elements. Luminaires with a small profile were specified to fit into the bottle racks, a backlit panel was chosen to light the window and all drivers were located outside the room to meet exacting temperature requirements.

A keypad and presets control five zones of light in the room, including a central pendant that adds ambient light and visual interest, a highlighted bottle display row, the window light, ceiling uplights and wall wash downlights behind the rows of bottles. Dimming features allow for a change of mood at the touch of a button, creating amazing visual impact—yet the system is nearly invisible in the room, a true test of a lighting designer’s art. Thanks to Morlights’ work, the collection now has a high-design home, wow factor included.

“There’s a lot of light packed into this small space, but the end result is a room that fulfills every function—and looks incredible.”—Avi Mor
