1001 South State Street is a hot new apartment building in Chicago’s South Loop designed to appeal to students and young creatives, and this unique clientele has had significant influence on the building’s concept. Housing 500 units, the building features built-in coworking spaces and “Makerspace,” which has a 3D printer and milling machine. It balances these work spaces with appealing entertainment areas, like the rooftop lounge and terrace. Morlights worked with architects Solomon Cordell Buenz to implement a fresh lighting design that met the building’s sustainability goals.
Throughout the design process, Morlights worked with three different interior designers, matching each’s unique style for a cohesive lighting plan. For the building’s expansive outdoor amenity deck, we utilized kick lighting around the pool and custom bollard acrylic cubes to eliminate unsightly light poles. We also assisted the building with the creation of a “lifestyle video statement,” which was projected on three 4K video screens to instantaneously give visitors and potential tenants a glimpse at the extraordinary resources available at 1001 South State Street. The project was an enormous success, earning an LEED-Gold certification and quickly establishing itself as one of the most popular residence towers in Chicago.
