Ships Gallery at MSI

The “Ships Gallery” at the Museum of Science and Industry held a prominent space, situated between two of the museum’s entrances with connecting halls to the automobile gallery and dining commons. However, despite the exhibit’s fantastic contents of over 50 model ships, exterior light often detracted from the room’s full grandeur. Morlights worked with the Museum of Science and Industry under a strict budget to re-concept the space, fully realizing the magnificent craftsmanship and artistry within this exhibit.

Morlights started by re-thinking the rundown, white ceiling that had previously served as background, and instead created a darker backdrop that instilled a heightened atmosphere. In order to meet budget constraints we used small track heads that eliminated the need for a case change and could easily be added to the alcoves, and worked closely with the manufacturer to customize these track heads for adaptable, detailed control. With a close eye on budgets, we also knew these dimmable LED lights would save on maintenance and replacement costs for the museum. Our process culminated with the installation of color tunable lamps in the visitor area, creating an activated walkway awash in blue, wavelike light. This path leads visitors to the exhibit, and immediately sets the tone for this impressive collection.
