When the Art Institute of Chicago decided to continue implementing an LED Standard design with its Medieval Gallery, Morlights knew the chosen option would need rigorous testing to ensure quality, complimentary lighting. We created extensive mock-ups to test the LED replacements, eventually presenting a comparative study between AIC’s preferred LED option and the existing sources.
Using PAR38 LED lamps from Ketra, Inc., we decided to showcase our chosen light with Monet’s famous “Haystacks” series, and put the light to the test in front of twenty AIC staff including curators, the CEO, and the COO. By color tuning the light to match the incandescents, as well as comparing CRI, illuminance, and spectral power distribution, we replicated the desirable qualities of the original lighting with all the benefits of an LED. The LED light source was overwhelming voted as the favorite during this comparative study by the AIC commission. This color-tunable, high-CRI LED source reduces energy within the exhibit, while ensuring the integrity of the invaluable works.
