The first
thought after reading Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, was that
the audience had to know who was who, or they would be lost the entire show. The
difficulty lied in the costume design for the production, something I don’t
favor very much.
I
started with the idea that this story can take place any time any place, so what
better place than modern times, in a big city. The costumes needed to show the
age differences, and keep the twins inline. To do so I choose to dress all the
younger characters in Abercrombie & Fitch clothing, keeping styles through the
class structure and color threw the relationships. Then Egeon, the father, is in
old tattered clothing, from his travels and his old “out of style” ways.
When designing the set, I wanted to play on the comedy of the show. I rounded up
ads that include twins or pairs. They were placed on fences that show the
audience a little scene, with a big city behind. There are two entrances and
exits threw the fences, and I imagine using the entrances on either side of the
stage.
The lighting design consists of six acting areas lit by nine fixtures for each
area. The design emphasis is on relaying time of day and visibility.
