JOB OPENING – Junior Designer

Morlights is an award-winning lighting design firm who pushes the boundaries of design and storytelling using light as its medium. Employing a theatrical lens, lighting designs by Morlights balance creativity with practicality. Each project is executed with leading-edge technology and a unique approach that combines imagination, inspiration and integrity. Our Chicago based office is currently working on several high-end, 5-star properties that are 30% below energy standards. Most are LEED projects, 95% of the products specified are LED and we only use programmable digital controls. We are working with world-class architects and developers across the globe to create remarkable lighting and lighting control designs.

As a Junior Designer for our Chicago office, you will work with the senior design staff to facilitate the documentation for lighting designs produced by our office. You will work with the design team to manage the luminaire selections, drafting, sketches, schedules and details. As a Junior Designer you will be exposed to a wide variety of design problems that need creative solutions. Candidates should be well-organized and self-driven with the ability to manage their time and effectively communicate with our team and clients in a professional manner.

Our Junior Designer needs to be willing to become an expert in the following software applications, if not already knowledgeable in:

  • Autodesk AutoCAD
    • Understands xrefs, sheets, blocks, schedule import and drawing tools
  • Autodesk Revit
    • Understands central models, setting up sheets, building families, inserting luminaires and schedules
  • 3D Studio Max
    • Understanding of basic 3d modeling, placing and working with realistic lighting, and basic understanding of material application
  • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • AGi32
    • Building and running photometric calculations
  • Filemaker
    • Using a database to manage information
  • Adobe Creative Suite
    • Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat
  • Bluebeam Revu

Compensation

Morlights team members are generously compensated, and the benefits package includes healthcare, simple IRA plans, and bonus packages. Salary is based commensurate with experience.  Minimum budget for position is $35,000 plus benefits.

Education & Experience

Our designer should have a bachelor’s degree in theatrical and/or architectural lighting or a related field. They should understand how a building is built and designed, as well as the drawings and details needed for construction and administration of a project to completion. An understanding of light and lighting is a requirement, and an understanding of architectural lighting is desirable. Junior designer must communicate in English as their primary language and be in the United States.
